Mental Health Misconceptions in India That Employers Still Believe

Workplace conversations about mental health have become more common, but greater visibility does not automatically mean greater understanding. Employees may still hesitate to discuss emotional difficulties, while managers may be unsure about how to respond when someone appears to be struggling. Some of the barriers come from assumptions that sound reasonable but can create problems in practice. An employee who asks for support may be considered unable to handle pressure. A person who appears quiet may be assumed to be disengaged. Someone experiencing a mental health difficulty may be expected to simply take time off and return once the problem disappears. These assumptions can influence workplace decisions, management behaviour, and employee trust.
